Twitter in flux
Sticky tweets. eMarketer is forecasting 26 million US adult Twitter users by the end of 2010, a spike of 44 on the total at the tailend of last year. And by 2012, nearly one-fifth of web users – or 36 million people – will be on the 140-character universe.
Twitter traffic growth has been slowing though, leading some observers to believe the service was being abandoned. However, research shows the platform is sticky and that long-time users are the most vocal participants.
“Twitter usage is still in flux,” says Paul Verna, eMarketer senior analyst, and author of the report Twitter: A Strong Current in the Social Media Mainstream. “There are many unanswered questions about Twitter’s long-term viability as a business, but writing off the company based on relatively small drops in unique visitors is shortsighted.”
