Something’s up when Merkel and Sarkozy are kissing, when Barack Obama is pressing lips with Chinese leader Hu Jintao, says Mark Terry. And, wow, Benjamin Netanyahu is actually getting it together with Mahmoud Abbas.

It’s fashion brand Benetton rolling out smooching banner images in public as part of its Unhate marketing campaign.

“What does Unhate mean?” asks the brand. “Un-hate. Stop hating, if you were hating. Unhate is a message that invites us to consider that hate and love are not as far away from each other as we think. Actually, the two opposing sentiments are often in a delicate and unstable balance. Our campaign promotes a shift in the balance: don’t hate, Unhate.”

It’s not just about pictures, either. Consumers can get in on the Unhating game at the Unhate Foundation campaign website and get on the Unhate List on Twitter. “Make a case for your enemy,” says the brand. “Post your Unhate message now.”

There’s also a Kiss Wall. People can assume a kiss posture before their webcam and post it to the web site for a kissing match.

And the Unhate banners are available as wallpapers and screensavers, plus there’s an Unhate soundtrack, a video (see below).

Oh, did we mention the Unhate Dove?

“The idea of tolerance in the United Colors of Benetton campaign will find further scope for application, equally tangible and symbolic, in the creation of an art installation, made using the empty bullet shells sent in by the inhabitants of war zones around the world,” says the brand. “Cuban artist Erik Ravelo, who is also the creator of the Lana Sutra series of sculptures, will recycle this ‘war waste’ to build a beautiful big dove of peace, Unate Dove, four metres long, which will carry with it the Foundation’s message of peace.”

However, Blue Marble is offering to transform the rooftop of any business into a ‘space-accessible billboard’ by integrating a QR code into the site, taking a satellite image from space and making it accessible in navigation apps like Google Earth and Google Maps.

“By connecting your company’s physical profile on Earth to the millions of people searching for products and services on the Internet, Blue Marble provides an efficient, innovative and effective way to connect you and your customers,” says Phillips & Company.

Canada partnered with microbiologists and immunologists to create a living billboard located in Toronto’s Queen Street West. We’re basically talking two large Petri dishes inoculated with live bacteria including penicillin, mould and pigmented bacteria. The Contagion message in action.

Starting 15 April, high-end brands are no longer able to promote extravagance, unless they wish to face a fine of more than $4,000. The state, it seems, would like advertisers to stop drawing attention to the widening gap between rich and poor.
