The International Network Of Street Papers, the umbrella organisation for street magazines such as the Big Issue, wants to take social mags digital and has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the move.

Readers of the digital street papers will purchase physical coupons from vendors at the same cover price as printed publications and access the magazines via QR codes.

“The digital edition will contain all the content from the magazine,” says INSP. “But with lower production costs and less print we can increase the efficiency and capacity of street papers as social enterprises, as well as reduce their environmental impact.”

The outfit is asking the Kickstarter crowdsourcing community for $5,000 to help fund two pilot schemes starting this summer with StreetWise in Chicago and The Big Issue in the north of England.

Crowdsourcing outfit Talenthouse is rolling out its ‘sponsored engagement engine’ offering customised campaigns built on branded content for consumers to share across social networks. Via Talenthouse, brands and established artists host ‘creative invites’ encouraging emerging talent to contribute their best work and spread the word among their followers through a viral contest platform. Fan communities follow and support the artists and creatives, sharing the content and driving conversations.

The company has already worked with brands and artists of the calibre of Nokia, Universal Music, Red Bull, EMI, Beck’s, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, U2, Lady Gaga and Florence + the Machine. Nikon sponsored a creative invite for bands to perform on stage at the recent SXSW and thousands of artists submitted videos of their live performances, generating 550,000 conversations and reaching 19 million people with Nikon’s messaging.

“The house is now open for brands and marketers to access the authentic engagement between our community of valued artists and creatives and their fans,” says Amos Pizzey, Talenthouse president said. “We’re thrilled that our model has been validated by the fact that every brand and established artist that used our platform sees the value in what we offer and have committed to multiple repeat campaigns.”

Australian wine company Casella is moving into beer brewing and, with the help of agency Analog Folk, has come up with the Perfect Lager Project. To tap into Aussie consumers’ beer taste and insight, there’s now a Perfect Lager Project app which drinkers can use to give feedback on all the beers they drink. Casella will then use that crowdsourced info to design a new lager.

Rex timeline makes the most of Facebook’s latest innovation and enables fans old and new to experience and relive the fascinating history of T. Rex,” says Johnny Hudson, head of marketing for Universal Music catalogue.

“Fans can explore key events and discover a host of rare and never seen before content including photos, videos and memorabilia. We’ve been receiving some amazing material from fans since launching the Facebook page, so wanted to expand on this and launch a public call to arms to help build the ultimate interactive fan resource.”

The move is part of Universal’s celebration of 40 years of glam rock, for which the company has also developed a Facebook app which allows fans to ‘glam up’ their profiles with T. Rex-inspired Facebook covers.

And, as part of the glam festivities, Absolute Radio yesterday hosted T.Rex takeover.

Crowdsourced media production outfit Poptent has launched Poptent Productions, a dedicated video unit comprising a social network of nearly 50,000 videographers to produce content for major brands and agencies. The company is promising to develop videos at a fraction of the cost of traditional video production methods.

One of Poptent Productions’ pilot clients is Dell, with a campaign which led to the broadcast of a high-profile TV ad aired during US college football’s BCS Championship Game. Dell currently has several assignments underway with Poptent.

“We believe that Poptent Production’s unique model is highly beneficial both to our clients, by being cost-effective and fast, as well as to our community of producers, by providing opportunities and incentives to be directly selected to work for some of the world’s most visible and respected brands,” says Andy Jedynak, Poptent CEO.

Chilean fashion brand Ripley joined forces with ad agency MRM to launch the Rompela Flash Mob. What is it? Well, the brand tasked both pro and amateur photographers with taking pictures of models dressed in Ripley gear for a new crowdsourced catalogue. Ripley handed out tips to shoot greenhorns, and provided the make-up artists, the hairdressers and the models.

Catalogues are a very important sales tool for retailers… but how do we make them relevant for a generation used to consuming content generated by themselves? asked MRM

“We made the first truly collaborative and social catalogue in the world, with our own fans as the photographers of our new 2012 catalogue.”
