Crowdsourced film set to hit the big screen

massMass music. Sony Pictures Entertainment is planning to run the crowdsourced film short Live Music prior to the cinema showing of its full-length animation feature Planet 51 in late November in the US. Live Music is the story of a love affair between two instrumental characters, Riff the guitar and Vanessa the violin.
The title is a result of the Mass Animation community-driven effort to make a short animated film. Intel launched a Facebook page last November to drive the project forward using a special app on the social networking site. Mass Animation provided the narrative, the look and feel of the film, as well as the soundtrack, spurring 17,000 visitors to download the animation software.
“Set in a musical instrument store, the story follows Riff, a rock ‘n’ roll guitar, who… falls in love to the wrong song but ends up with Vanessa, the classical violin of his dreams,” says Intel. “The story is conveyed through the universal language of music, allowing the expressions and actions of the characters to be instantly relatable globally. The instruments are brought to life through original compositions and familiar rock tunes played principally by legendary guitarist Steve Vai as Riff and acclaimed violinist Ann Marie Calhoun as Vanessa.”
The final effort, produced and directed by former Sony Pictures Digital president Yair Landau, comprises scenes submitted by more than 50 users who each received $500.

brand-e.biz: Lots of people down on this because it’s Intel-backed and therefore not real social media. Oh no?
