cool creative: west coast billboard art
Air art. Money’s tight in the ads business. And all those billboards are standing there empty of marketing comms. What to do? Well, if you’re the MAK Center for Art & Architecture in Los Angeles you commission a score of artists to fill those big, beautiful spaces in the sky with… big, beautiful art in the sky.
So, we’re pleased to bring you How Many Billboards? Art In Stead, which proposes that art periodically displace advertisement in the urban environment.
“Los Angeles public space begs for smart art to break up the monotony of everyday media fare, and the billboard provides a fertile position for artists who work critically and site-responsively to test their ideas in urban media space,” the MAK says. “Contemporary art gains a momentarily broad audience, and city dwellers are extended a daily invitation to reflect and contemplate. Channels are opened for experimentation, innovation, and cultural exchange.”
If you can’t make it over to LA, well, here are the billboards online In Stead.
