Celebrating with Ikea (Billy)

  • Sharebar

billy1Total shelving. Billy’s 30 years old. And the Swiss have been determined to make a lot of that. For one thing, Billy’s been on a tour of the entire country, taking in the likes of Lucerne, Bern, Zermatt and Zurich, among other locations. And, of course, they’ve produced a stop-motion film of Billy’s three-week trip, all of it condensed into just five minutes of video.
Hold on, you don’t know who Billy is?
We are talking Ikea’s Billy. The bookshelf that first slipped out of a flat pack in 1979 and has since sold more than 40 million units. You’ll be telling us next that you had no idea that if you laid all that shelving end to end you’d have 70,000 kms of Billy. That’s almost twice round the Equator, of course.
OK, enough of all that length, and back to the birthday campaign. There’s a microsite where you can watch the film, listen to The Billy Song, and get your hands on The Billy Book which chronicles Billy’s story. Plus a map where you can plant a digital pin to mark your Billy’s exact spot. (Well, you can if your shelves live in Switzerland.)
Wait, there’s more. And we mean more Billy. In the form of special edition Billy shelving and doors.
Those Swiss are absolutely crazy about Billy – or birthdays – for sure.
